Never in the history of junior varsity has a kid been so excited to have been made part of the team.
We’ve discussed this in length, with Should Jake Play Basketball?, Jake Has The Final Word, and more recently with We Got The Basketball Schedule, and Now We’re Freaking Out.
Tonight was night two of tryouts. Yesterday was plenty of calisthenics, conditioning work, and general sweat ’em till they drop kind of stuff. Tonight seemed to be more drill work, 3 on 3, and skills.
I went to the school to watch the final 20 minutes and see if I could get a sense for what was to follow. Jake’s never been good at bringing home details. What 15 year old is?
What I saw was a kid trying his best. He was sweating, he was struggling, but he was giving it everything he had. I even heard him say “Yes, Coach!” a few times, just like we practiced. He was holding his own, but clearly in over his head with the technical aspect of the game. This isn’t a surprise. He’s never played.
When the tryouts were over and the coaches retreated to their small office, Jake was first in line, excitedly bouncing up and down asking if he’d made the team yet. They told him they were making up the roster right then, and that it would be posted in 5 minutes. He used the interlude to go change his clothes and come straight back. Coach Giberson walked right past him to post the roster on the wall. Jake followed.
“Did I make it?”
Coach helped him look over the sheet and asked him if he saw his name. There it was, four down on the JV list. Jake thrust his arms into the air and shouted, “Yes! I’m finally part of a team!”
He’s been 1 part elated, and 1 part exhausted since that moment. We went home and he devoured his dinner, and frankly hasn’t stopped snacking since. We had to go almost immediately to Gabe’s rec game, but I stole him away for a quick video review.
Here it is:
