Jacob won Medway Middle School’s 8th grade student of the month for May! He’s shown incredible growth in maturity, independence, and even his grades this year. He is handling the upcoming thoughts of transition to high school well. He’s actually excited! His mother and I are super proud of him! We think it’s well deserved.
We got a call a couple of days ago, letting us know that he’d won. The kids aren’t supposed to know, but the parents get a heads up so they can join the assembly if possible. Both Olivia and Jacob were students of the month last year, and Liv’s been trying really hard to repeat. When all was said and done, Jake asked why he won again. The huge smile on his face tells me he doesn’t really care!
Knowing Jake would never go out onto the gym floor in front of the entire school to collect his certificate, we enlisted Olivia to do it for him. She was genuinely excited to help.
Beth and I got there early, each coming from our respective workplaces. The parents are supposed to remain safely tucked away in the cafeteria until the student’s name is called. I missed this part, and had the door to the gym half-opened before Beth grabbed me and pulled me back to secrecy.
Ms. Pray stood at her podium and read the tributes each teacher makes to their student. Here is Jake’s:
Being 8th grade parents, we went last (MMS is 5-8). Liv did a great job standing in for her brother, who did a great job of his own by staying inside the gymnasium. In the past he’d have run for the seclusion of the hallway. After the awarding of the certificate, he came down to us as the rest of the student body filed towards their classrooms. His 1:1 help, Mrs. P., said that he knew it was him almost from the first word, and confided in her that he was much to scared to go in front of everybody. She assured him that Liv had it covered.
Look how excited he looks!
The other winners today were: Teagan York, 5th grade; Abigail Kelly, 6th grade, and Sherrae Charette, 7th grade. Congratulations to you all!
