Try It, You’ll Like It

Tell Your Friends

Disclaimer:  For dinner last night, I roasted some split breasts of chicken, and served them with fresh tomatoes, white rice and cut green beans.

Tonight, however, is a different story.  It’s a typical Wednesday when the kids are pulled in a bunch of directions, and everyone’s scrambling to get homework done before taking off again to church for Royal Rangers/MPact Ministries.  Dinners on Wednesdays are usually quick and easy.  Gabe even requested, and I consented, to eat in front of the TV in the living room.  Don’t judge.

We have pretty bland tastes in the Whitehouse family.  By we, I of course mean all of us besides me, and sometimes Liv.  Jake only eats a few things, and Gabe even fewer.  Plain, store-brand Hamburger Helper is a surefire winner.  Last month, I brought home a Bacon Cheeseburger version.  I made a pan for Liv and I, and a second pan of “the usual.”  Liv tried it (she’s my brave soul), and liked it.  Today I branched out and brought home Bacon Cheeseburger AND Crunchy Taco – to give Liv some choice.

Surprisingly, she chose Crunchy Taco.  It smelled so good, even Beth asked for a sample before I put the cheese topping on.  It is made with rice and not noodles, which is different, but was well-liked.  Liv and I had big bowls with cheesy topping, and Beth had a side serving, because her allotted slop was coming from the “plain” pan.

I served it in bowls with tortilla chips.  The $2 kind, because that’s the kind of cash I roll in.  As Beth ooh-ed and aah-ed over her second side serving (we spoil her), Liv raved that this may have just dethroned her favorite food of all time – breakfast sausage.  Between mouthfuls, Beth muttered that this stuff was worthy of a blog post.  So, here I sit.

Did anyone learn the lesson that sometimes trying new things is rewarding?  I doubt it.  Did we re-define how we’re going to hold future taco nights?  You bet.
